Cystoscopy is an endoscopic procedure performed under local anesthesia to diagnose possible diseases in the urinary canal and bladder. It is performed in men and women by applying a local anesthetic gel to the urethra and then advancing the cystoscope (containing a camera, light source and working channel) through the urethra.
It is used in the diagnosis of hematuria (bleeding in the urine), urethra diseases, prostate gland diseases, bladder tumors and especially in the follow-up after treatment. It also allows biopsies to be taken from suspicious areas during the procedure. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and does not require hospitalization.
